Determining Where to Start With Business Intelligence
Providing technical sales for business intelligence, often times I get asked where a company should start. It is easy to go in, start reviewing processes and coming up with recommendations, and quickly getting overwhelmed by the information requirements that any organization has.
One way we tell our customers to start is by looking at the processes they are already doing. In any organization, you can look around and find a lot of manual processing that is being done by extracting data from an information system and entering it into a spreadsheet. This data is then further analyzed and presented to the decision makers.
These processes are a perfect place to start looking. Using the business intelligence tools that are available on the market, such as Crystal Reports, Synoptix, Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server, among others, you can usually automate that whole process saving time and providing consistent analysis time and time again. You can also provide these reports on demand to the decision makers giving them quicker and more timely access to the information they need to make their decisions.
The nice thing about this approach is most of the hard work is already done. You know what the process is to come up with the information from the manual process, you only have to use the tool to automate it. It is also typically very easy to show a quick ROI for this project and begin recognizing the potential for additional business intelligence in your organization.
